CA Engineering: Pushing Boundaries in IoT and Wireless Tech

Howard Gee, President
Founded in 1995, CA Engineering (CAE) is a professional wireless technology consulting and design firm with expertise in developing and integrating associated hardware and software. The company is known for achievements such as being named the first Qualcomm authorized design center, rolling out the first wireless remote sensing product line, and the first military grade Wi-Fi.

As a trusted wireless technology partner for several Fortune 100 companies, CAE helps clients broaden the functional scope of their products with the prowess of IoT. From hardware design, embedded software development and integration, to testing IoT devices as they roll off the manufacturing line, CAE does it all, including assisting clients in the deployment of IoT solutions. The company also holds special expertise in developing, managing, and customizing backends for IoT data.

This year, CAE added another feather to its cap by becoming one of the first full integrators of Azure Sphere technology into the overall Azure ecosystem. Without using an “existing module,” as CAE's president Howard Gee mentions, the company developed a "greenfield” design based on a MediaTek SOC by singlehandedly undertaking the hardware and software development and integration and carrying out all the regulatory and functional testing. They even developed an Azure Sphere backend pipeline.

CAE recognizes Azure Sphere as the perfect medium for growing its wireless technology expertise as the technology with high-level Linux OS, cloud-based security, and cross-over MCU enables device/appliance manufacturers to set up and maintain secure IoT networks that can be updated, monitored, and controlled remotely. In Azure Sphere, CAE also sees a smoother and secure route for sending data from devices to the backend and vice versa.

CAE works closely with clients to identify and configure the operation of the sensors and IoT devices they'd use.

The company gets on the same page with them in terms of what data they're trying to collect, how the data can be pulled off or sent to the appliance in question, and how it would be presented after reaching the backend.
They would then formulate an Azure Sphere data pipeline that would securely place the data in either a generic backend or a more customized one depending on the use case.

A recent success story best describes CAE's value proposition. The company helped a reputed home appliances manufacturer design a standalone module to plug into over 25 different appliances, pull data off its control boards, and push it to the backend database. The client needed a module to perform specific functions, such as sending commands for turning on or off oven lights, setting the temperature in refrigerators, starting or stopping dishwashers, and, most importantly, receiving and implementing firmware updates to the appliances. CAE quickly developed the module that could easily be loaded on the appliances, interface with a user-facing application, configure firmware updates and send the confirmation back to the manufacturer. For the past seven months, the client has integrated this module into virtually every product they manufactured.

We plan to continue to invest in staying current with Microsoft's evolution, in developing Microsoft based technologies, and in broadening our experience in implementing those technologies in real-world settings for the betterment of our customers' businesses

Scripting many such success stories and having carved a niche in the IoT space, CAE is planning to make the best use of the developments in Microsoft's Azure Sphere technology.

"We will continue to stay current with Microsoft's evolution, in developing Microsoft-based technologies, and in broadening our experience in implementing those technologies in real world settings for the betterment of our customers' businesses," says Gee.
